Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer Date: 5/9/2008 Subject: Linked object in eps disappear after saving when placed
Question QUESTION: I opened a EPS that was sent to by someone else, there was linked object/file in the EPS, but when after opened it up and do a save, then I open a new document and place this EPS and embed it, the linked object/file that was suppose to be in there disappeared... How do I solve this problem??? Is there anything to do with my save setting???
ANSWER: Hi Ken,
You will need to embed the linked image in the eps before you save and place. When you embed an eps into another document, it needs all linked files to be embedded in the eps. Embedding the parent .eps file does not automatically embed the linked resource files so you need to do this in Illustrator.
If the linked files were not sent with the file, you will need to get them.
Thanks

QUESTION: Hi Kevin,
But if I just do a place and embed the EPS file that my friend sent me, after embedding, the linked file appeared. I do not understand how the linked file worked, because I do not have the linked files send to me, yet if I do a place and embed, it can be seen. How come the same thing do not work if I just open it up and do a save without touching anything before I do a place n embed in a new document???
Answer Hi Ken,
What you have is a big mess.
Seriously though, when you place the file directly, a lo-res preview of the linked file shows up, not the actual file (because it is not embedded). The linked file is not working, its what I call a "ghost image". The linked file is not really there and will give you lots of headaches when you try to send out to pdf or print.
So when you open the file and try to resave, the linked file is unavailable so you are saving it without the linked file as a resource. It does not save a preview, so it "disappears".
Either way, this is not a print-ready file without the original linked file. Even if you see it with the untouched eps, it will be lo-res if it even prints (most commercial printers will give you an error report stating that the file is missing.)
You will need to get a hold of the linked file if you intend to open the eps and resave.
