Adobe Illustrator/Combining .ai files.

Question
I'm working on a fairly complex line drawing.  Several portions of it are so complex they became separate projects on their own.  Now that I want to integrate them into the main file I find I can't do that unless I flatten the image.  Otherwise when I try to save the layers intact for transport to the main file I keep getting a message that the image is too large and will fall off the drawing if pasted.  I find it really weird that you can't combine two .ai files together and still retain the layers.  What am I doing wrong?

Answer
HI David,

Under the layers options menu (in the palette) choose "paste remembers layers".

Also make sure that your document you are pasting into is large enough to handle the paste. If you have a stray point off the doc you are trying to paste, it may register that it is too large to paste.

Thanks
