Adobe Illustrator/Effects won't work with a Clipping Mask

Question
I am probably missing something simple but...I am using AI10 and when I create a clipping mask I am then unable to apply effects, such as outer glow, drop shadow etc. they just simply don't show up. I have tried applying the effect before creating a clipping mask but the effects are removed when the mask is created. I use this tool a lot so I hope you can help!
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Fran,

You cannot apply effects to a clipping mask. You will need to duplicate the object/shape that you created the mask with and turn it into a normal filled object. Throw it behind the clipped area and then apply the effects to that new shape.

Thanks
