Adobe Illustrator/Importing CAD into Illustrator

Question
Hi Kevin-

Sorry for asking so many questions.  I really want to get this thing figured out so I can start coloring it, but I keep running into additional problems.  When I am importing the CAD file, the CAD file has x refs.  These seem to disappear when the drawing is imported.  Do you have to somehow bind the xrefs to import the drawing correctly into Illustrator?  If so, how do you do that?  I guess it makes sense that Illustrator would have no clue how to treat x-refs.  Should I go ahead and modify my drawing by copying and pasting to have no x-refs?

Thanks  so much for all of your help!

Holly

Answer
Hi Holly,

Im not familiar with CAD enough to answer this question accurately. This is really a CAD issue when saving out your file rather than an Illustrator question.

There may be a preference in CAD to export them out with your file. I googled your issue and most forums state CAD 2004 can export xrefs to import to other apps, so it is possible somehow...

Without knowing how to do this I would modify your drawing with no xrefs or add them manually in IL (unreasonable perhaps) after you import the DWG file, or try to export them separately and bring them in as their own file.

Thanks

Kevin
