Question QUESTION: I have AICS and need to save a file in an earlier format, say AI8. Can you tell me if it can be done and how to do this?
ANSWER: Hi Ginger,
Yes you can save to earlier versions from Illustrator CS.
Here's how to do it:
1. Go to File/Export. In the export window that will open, under "Save as type" select "Illustrator Legacy (*.AI)". Give your file a name under "File name". Click "save"
2.After clicking save you'll get the "Illustrator Legacy options". At top you'll be able to put the version you want to save down to. Choose Illustrator 8 (you wanted to save to version 8 in your question). Click OK.
You should be able to open the new file in version 8. However, the results are not always predictable specially with features that are available in CS but not available or supported by version 8. You may have to fix a few things to make the file look like the original.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best regards,
Laith

QUESTION: I realized too late that the version I am using is AICS2 not CS. Sorry.
When I go to Export the AI isn't even on there let alone the Legacy option. What now?
Answer Hi again Ginger,
Export to "Illustrator Legacy" is only available in Illustrator CS.
In Illustrator CS2 you can use the "Save as" option to save down to earlier versions. Here's what to do:
1. Click "Save as" and give your file a name.
2. Click "Save"
3. In the "Illustrator Options" window you can change the version of your saved file from the drop down menu at the top.
4. Click ok and you're done.
I have to remind you that the new file may not match the original file because CS2 has many features that were not available in older versions (Specially dealing with transparency (like drop shadows for example)).
Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'll be glad to help you.
