Adobe Illustrator/Ai corruption
Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 7/21/2008
QuestionQUESTION: Hello,
I designed a file in CS2, had about 12 picture files placed into it and some brush script font. Saved the file in .ai format and it saved fine. However, when trying to reopen the file. I get an error stating Illustration ended unexpectedly. Offending Operator: XI, it then gives the context. I opened it in notepad and found the string it was talking about, but it does not show up there the way it does on the illustrator error message. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This was save with compression on and pdf compatability off. Thanks in advance.
ANSWER: Hi Ryan,
The error is because you saved it without the pdf compatibility turned on. It is a common error that can occur from this.
Here are some tricks you can try:
Remove the offending error command in your text editor.
Place the file in a new Illustrator Document.
Place in InDesign and save as a pdf.
Try to open in Acrobat. While this is a slim chance, it may still recognize the postscript and open. Then resave.
The only way this will come back as a complete AI doc is if the text editor option works, otherwise you will just have a flatend image with no paths.
Sorry
Kevin

QUESTION: When I go to place the file in an empty document I get those little boxes explaining that the pdf function was turned off. The funny thing is the thumbnail preview is spot on. Also, any idea what I should erase, specifically from the text editor?
AnswerSorry Ryan,
When it comes to messing with the coding of the files, I've only gone as far as removing the offending error line.
Your preview is just a snapshot of the file, which is one of the first things saved. It may look ok, but the file may be garbage.
If none of the suggestions worked (normally placing in ID works), then your file may truly be gone. Sorry.
Wish I had more optimistic news.
