Adobe Illustrator/Filling a rectangle or circle with a photo

Question
I'm using Illustrator CS3 and have not worked in Illustrator since version 10.
Even then I did not use it extensively. I'm highly skilled in QuarkXpress and
In-Design and want to "pull a photo into" a created shape in Illustrator similar
to how "Get Picture" works in Quark.
How is it done?
P.S. I'm doing contract work and they insist that all projects be completed in
Illustrator. Please help.

Answer
Hi Beth,

You need to create a clipping mask. Place the photo on its own layer, then draw the shape that you wish to use as the picture box. Make sure this is on top of the photo. Then click the clipping mask button at the bottom of the layers palette. You will have to keep the photo/mask on its own layer to keep the clipped image intact.

Thanks
