Question
I recently bought a Gateway Windows Vista 64bit Operating System, Intel Core 2Quad CPU Computer with 4gig ram and 700gig space. I tried loading Illustrator9 and it loaded but would not work. I'd get an error box and then the program would close. I uninstalled it.
What am I doing wrong. Should I re-install?
Also, I installed CS3 and it works great, only when I try to open any jpg file larger then 2megabites big it wont open it. How can I let illustrator use more of my computer ram?

Answer
Hi Isaac,

Illustrator 9 is not compatible with Vista at all. It will not run in a vista operating system, so reinstalling it will not work.

Next, for the JPG, you should first create a new document in Illustrator CS3, then use the File>Place command to place the jpg into your document. File>Open is not the best practice for many reasons. Also, the fact that the jpg is 2 MB doesn't mean much, its the decompressed file size that matters which could be significantly large if compressed it is 2 megs.

What most people don't realize is 4 G of RAM really is not a lot. What matters is how much RAM you have available at the time of the operation running. Vista hogs a lot of it and if you have other applications open at the same time, fonts installed, system add-ons, etc. it all adds up and reduces your actual memory.

If you are experiencing a log of errors while using IL, I would recommend opening the memory usage control panel and see just how much you actually have.

Thanks

Kevin
