Question
QUESTION: Hi Kevin, I've created a 40MB AI (CS2) and would like to know how to create a PDF for output without deteriorating its quality.  I tried to go to print and choose Adobe Postsript File as the printer.  I know the overall setting except "Output" & "Color Management" & "Advanced".  What'll be the approximate size for the PDF after conversion? Pls advise.

ANSWER: Hi Abby,

You should never use the print function to make your pdfs.

Use the Save as function and choose PDF from the file formats.

I would save this using the PRESS QUALITY preset and only add crop marks if needed. You do not need to go into color management or other options unless your printer directs you to. This preset gives you the best quality possible.

Im not sure how large this will be but it wont be a significant drop in size.

Thanks

Kevin

QUESTION: oh btw, i tick the "All printer marks" and enter 3mm for each bleed when saving as pdf, but there isn't any mark turn out in the pdf.  (I've already chosen the pdf to print on a paper larger than the Artboard size).  There should be enough space for those marks to be shown.  What's wrong?

Answer
Hi Abby,

You will need to add a bleed (normally 0.25") under the marks and bleeds options. The trim marks automatically are the size of your artboard, so increasing that wont help. Go back to your original size and increase the bleed.

Thanks

Kevin
