Adobe Illustrator/Illustrator CS3

Question
It seems like it should be soooo simple.   I want to cut a letter in half.
I have gone into "type" and created outlines.   But I can't seem to get the scissors tool or knife to cut it. Am I missing something?    Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Melissa,

I have an easier way to cut this rather than using the scissors tool. Draw a rectangle over half your letter. Then select both shapes (the letter and the rectangle) and use the pathfinder palette to divide the shapes into pieces. You can then ungroup and delete the un-needed objects.

Thanks
