Adobe Illustrator/can't open existing ai files in cs2

Question
I'm working on a mac osx version 10.4.11.
Illustrator 12.1
When I try to open any existing ai file the beach ball just keeps turning but the file doesn't open.
The program has functioned perfectly until now.

Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Myron,

Check your fonts. Usually it is either trying to activate a font needed for the design or it is conflicting with a font you loaded recently. If you are not sure, use your font management software to turn off all but the macintosh necessary fonts and then try reopening.

If you do not have a font management program running, you should look into getting one, there are several free ones out there.

Otherwise another option is to try to open it in Photoshop or place it in InDesign and see if it asks you for a font or just places the image.

Thanks

Kevin
