Adobe Illustrator/Automatically embedding files

Question
I'm using CS3(MAC) and for some unknown reason Illustrator has started automatically embedding imported files. I never changed any settings and I can't find where to turn it off.
It's very frustrating when updating links.

Answer
Andy,
When you import or re-link an image your are presented with a dialog. Be sure that the "Link" option is checked when the file you are importing or re-linking to is selected. I think the "Link" option becomes unchecked automatically when you select a file that is of a type that Illustrator cannot link to - so it embeds that file. And from that point on the "Link" option stays unchecked by default. Once you make sure that the Link coptin is checked and import a file it seems to remain checked. Until the next time it becomes unchecked and sticks. So from now on pay close attention to the "LInk" option.
