Adobe Illustrator/Illustrator vs. Photoshop Pantone color breakdowns

Question
Amy,
Illustrator CS3 gives me different CMYK, RGB and HEX numbers for Pantone
colors than Photoshop CS3 does. Why, and how do I know which is corrrect?

Thanks,
Michael

Answer
Hi Michael,

In Illustrator, if you are doing a 4-color process job, go with the mixtures you see in the "Pantone Solid to Process" color book. They are the numbers from Pantone that get you the closest that you can get to solid inks. I have to recommend that you get yourself a (paper) Pantone Bridge Guide, too. Some solids look nothing like their Process equivalents. Well, that's a little harsh. They look something like them but could easily disappoint.

Good luck!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
