Adobe Illustrator/Magazine Ad spec questions
Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 1/27/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
I am attempting to do some freelance graphic design but actually learned the program (CS3) for Fashion Design purposes...
I was instructed by the client that the magazine needs a proof (does this mean a print out??) and the specifications for the proof are the following:
- Line Screen 133
- Output 100%
- Must be "press quality"
From the research I have done it seems that these are specifications for printing... Is this correct? Or is there something within the file itself that I need to adjust...?
I am a bit panicked because this has to be in tomorrow!! And I didn't even realize that the Proof meant printed!!
Help???!!
ANSWER: Hi Jessica,
A proof is normally a press-quality printout of your project. That is why they sent you the specs for the proof. However, you will need to print this at a printer or other professional venue. Home printers - inkjet or laser will not suffice. This is meant for a professional print shop to run a proof with.
You should be sending the file to a printer to give you (and your client a proof).
Thanks
Kevin

QUESTION: Kevin,
First of all THANK YOU!!! I so appreciate your super speedy response. I had a feeling that it all had to do with printing, and am happy to have that confirmed as a fact.
I also had a feeling that a regular home printer wouldn't do it.
The only other question I have is, if I make sure that I go to a printer that specializes in Illustrator etc (AKA: somewhere reliable and professional) will THEY know what I mean with the line screen, and output etc...? I ask because, clearly I myself am not sure and I need to make sure that it is correct... so if they ask me something I probably won't be able to answer and know I am answering correctly... Generally is this something that they would know?
Thanks again Kevin!! I imagine I'll be asking you a ton more in the future !
AnswerHi Jessica,
First, you wouldn't give a printer a PDF file (file save as). But you will need to communicate with the printer before you save the PDF to ensure that you choose the correct settings (my default is Press Quality with printer marks added). They will understand your clients request and should be able to output at the line screen required.
Thanks
Kevin
