Adobe Illustrator - Connecting shapes

Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 10/21/2009

Question
Hi,
I am trying to create a floor plan using illustrator, it seems really simple but I'm a newbie as I usually use photoshop.
I have created two rectangles to reflect the perimeter of the room. One is slightly smaller than the other. I want to then connect them together but lose the connecting line where they touch each other, therefore creating one shape.
How do I do this? Please help!
(I am using a Mac and CS3)

Answer
Hi Jessica,

Go to window>Pathfinder and open the Pathfinder palette. Select both rectangles using the Selection Tool (black arrow). Then click the first button on the pathfinder, then click the expand button.

This will merge the two shapes into one continuous shape.

Thanks

Kevin
