I can see items in Acrobat so it's there and I don't think it's corrupt. My Mac takes 15 minutes trying to open then says can't open illustration. No other info. I have plenty of memory so that's not the issue. It is a huge job (1.9 GB) and took many hours so please help me open the file. Thanks.

1.9GB is indeed a big file. I am not sure why the file is so big but it should not be that big unless it is massive and has hundreds of layers with tonnes of mesh gradients and effects.
Is there a pdf version as well? If so you can try opening that in illustrator as it may be a lot smaller.
Try changing your display quality to the lowest setting and perhaps try opening it in outline mode rather than preview mode, these two steps will help lighten the load on your computer.
