Question

Security Color option
Hi Richard,
I print digital heat transfers, and my printer is telling me I need to make a "SecurityColor" layer which will be used to print a solid white shape of the entire image underneath all the CMYK layers. I was told to open the file in Acrobat then go to the "Advanced" menu (at top) --> Print Production --> Output Preview --> and click the Security Color option in the list of CMYK Plates. The problem is I don't see any Security Color option. Do you know what I'm talking about and what I should do?
Marianne

Answer
You may have to talk to your printer regarding a correct solution to this.
One way to do a security layer in Illustrator is to select everything, then copy everything into a new layer (at the bottom of your document), then fill everything with a spot colour that is not being used anywhere else in the document. This layer should be invisible in illustrator and in adobe viewer as it is below all other layers, but it can be seen in adobe acrobat professional if you do a separation preview. You can then tell the printer which spot colour is your security colour layer.
