Adobe Illustrator/Converting an Illustrator file to Black & White

Question
Hi Amy, I'm using CS on PC. I'm working on an Illustrator document that started out as a jpeg, was traced by CoralTrace and saved as an .ai file. It's supposed to be a completely black and white image, but after converting to grayscale some of the fills & strokes are not 100% black ??

Answer
Hi Paul,

Maybe you started out as RGB and then converted to Grayscale. That will happen.

Always work in CMYK mode instead of RGB if you want true print black.

You can fix it using the Select > Same > Fill & Stroke -or- Select > Same > Fill Color.

Choose the white arrow tool and select one of the objects that is the wrong percentage of black. Then choose Select > Same > Fill Color. Now you can change the fills of all selected objects to 100% black at once.

Repeat this until all the objects are done.

A tip is to HIDE the objects as you correct them.

I hope this helps!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
