Adobe Illustrator/text paragraph inside a circle

Question
Hello Kevin,
I am trying to fill a circle with lines of text that stay within the circle. So I drew a circle and then used the 'area type tool,' which then gave me a message about a 'non-compound, non-masking path.'  The regular 'type tool' doesn't have any boundaries to stay within, so my text is not contained within the circle.  Help!  I have tried looking at several online tutorials but am still not understanding.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Helen.

Answer
Hi Helen,

To be safe, create a new layer and create your circle using the ellipse tool. Fill the circle with the default stroke/fill (white fill, 1pt black stroke) and then click on it using  the area type tool. It should work. I have a feeling that other objects or masks within the current layer is what was affecting your type tool. If it still gives you an error, let me know.

Thanks

Kevin
