Adobe Illustrator/Saving an ai file to pdf

Question
What seems like a simple process has not been one for me. When I have a completed project, it has a few layers, I want to save it as a pdf. I go to save as, click on the pdf, it goes thru all the motions but when I load up the pdf to check it the page is blank. So what happened? I am way too new to this ai CS4 program so take it easy on my :-)
I think I might know... is your artwork maybe off of the artboard?
I only have CS3 but if you want to send me the AI file, please save it as AI version CS3 and send it on over. AmyLynPace@yahoo.com
I don't share your artwork with anyone or use it in anyway, in case you are worried.
