Adobe Illustrator/Vignetted vignette?

Question
Hi Amy. I have created a 0%-90% vignette in AI-CS3 and need to "feather" the edges (at least the L&R sides), so there aren't hard edges along the sides when printed on a cylindrical plastic bottle. Is there a way to vignette the edges of this vignette in AI or in PS-CS? Is it possible to feather only the L&R sides and not the top and bottom? I've seen photos with a vignetted "frame" around them and thought this technique might work for my purpose now. Can do?
Any help will be appreciated.
Marianne

Answer
Hi Marianne,

Can you make a white rectangle on both sides of the object and give those white rectangles a Gaussian blur of about 34?

(Effect > Blur > Gaussian Blur)
Make sure your Effect > Document Raster Effect Settings are at 300dpi before you do this... for a nice, smooth gradient.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
