Adobe Illustrator/Illustrator drop shadow has box round it when printed

Question
Hi Amy..... Just when I thought I knew it all another problem arises, I would
like to add a drop shadow to text and vector images of which part of the
items are over a solid colour. Everything is ok and looks great although when
I send it to print... (being that I have a £2500 rip)  there is a box around the
drop shadow, I have tried to flatten the artwork within Illustrator, but it is still
there, is there someting else I should be doing to avoid this. Please help im
going bald over this and my wife prefers me with hair. Thanks in advance

Answer
Hi Paul.

You have to flatten selectively, I believe.

Try selecting the text with the drop shadow *AND* the object of solid color, *THEN* choose Object > Flatten Transparency.

You sound like you probably know which options you need in the flatten options (High resolution, preserve alpha or spot, etc.).

This should result in something that rips fine.

If it doesn't, get back to me?

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
