Question QUESTION: Hi Amy,
I have a two questions
1) My links are not staying after I create a file. Once I place a file, like a PSD graphic into a file I created in AI the link should stay. If I close that file and open again the link has been broken.
2)I can not launch a AI file by just clicking on the file. I have to open the file from within AI.

I am going to guess you are on a Mac. Take a look at this post on the forums and see if this sounds like it could be the problem. Some of the participants also suggest that the user account might need to be re-created (reading between the lines, there).

Of course, if you are working in a complex network environment, you might be limited as to what you can do. If you don't have network support who can look into this for you, you might want to visit the Adobe forums and find some people with the same issue.
If worse comes to worst, you could embed the files instead of linking them. Of course, the files will be larger but it will save time.
But you could test some things.
1) Delete the user preferences. QUIT ILLUSTRATOR and search your PC for the file AIprefs and delete it. It will be re-created when you restart Illustrator. I don't expect this to fix it but you should always try this when things start happening in Illustrator.
2) Your user account on the machine. Create a new user account with admin privileges, reboot, and see if the problem happens when logged in as that user. Doing this could very well fix both problems.
3) Your network. Of course, I am no network analyst but the nature of the problem hints at network issues. Test this by working 100% local, if you can. Save your files locally, then move them to a network volume (if your workflow requires it), only link to local files, etc.
You can even go so far as to disconnect from the network. Read this article/post in the forums.
As far as AI not opening from clicking on document icons, try repairing the file association by right clicking on the AI document icon and do an Open With > Choose Program > (find Illustrator in the list) and check the []Always use this program to open this type of file. I say this confidently but I have a problem with PhotoShop file associations on my own machine that I have not managed to repair, going on three years. Something about my registry.
