Adobe Illustrator - Merging Illustrator files - with Layers intact

Expert: Tom Rouze - 6/3/2009

Question
I have several files where I have plotted dots on a US Map.  I have each dot labeled in a separate layer for easy identification and deletion.

I need to merge the file into one document - keeping all of the layers intact.

In InDesign you can just drag the layer over, but it seems that Illustrator cannot.

Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Christy,

Try this. Copy everything you want then open/create the document where you want to paste them.  Open the layers palette menu (click the 3 little lines in the upper right corner of the layers window). Click on Paste Remember Layers.
Then paste your item into the document.

That should do it. Hope this helped.

Thank you,

Tom
