Adobe Illustrator/embedded image "Link" information goes missing

Question
Hello,
I have an unusual problem it seems.
Yes I am on a network. PC user. CS4 Suite, Illustrator Question.
An EPS file has been created with many embedded images contained in the document. Some images that have been placed show up every time I open the file. The problem is opening up the "Links" window more than half of the images list no link information. Completely gone yet the image exists on the layout.
choose one of the images, say a background. Delete, re-place an image into the background, embed it. Looking at the Links window, information is there at present. Save as, checkmark the box to save embedded images, and finally close. Upon re-opening the file the newly place background is showing but, Link information is blank.
the problem with this is sending to a printing company the response i get from them is we need the link information to accomplish printing the packaging.
Completely wiped my machine and installed a fresh copy of CS4 suite. Still have this problem from the start. This is not exclusive to this one file. The problem re-occurs frequently.
Do I just resolve to simply link all my images and send the printer a package of various files that will complete everything? It's the only workaround. I would like to figure this problem out.
On a side note another user can open any file i have and their program demonstrates every single link information.
Perhaps something deep in preferences? any clue you might have would be very helpful, Kevin.

Answer
Hi Randy,

You can have linked images with link information or embedded images with no information. There is no way to retain embedded image information since by embedding you break the link. The information will remain until you close then it will be gone. What your coworker is seeing when they open is linked files that you have not embedded.

When you place and image in IL first make sure "link image" is checked in the place dialogue box, then never push the "embed image" button at the top of the window.

Keep your images linked or relink them all and your information will remain.

Sorry you reinstalled, that will do nothing for this.

Thanks

Kevin
