Adobe Illustrator/One thousand color swatches from thin air
Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 6/2/2009
QuestionQUESTION: Kevin,
I have to copy art from older CS3 docs to new CS3 dos. This is happening with almost every item.
Restarting Illustrator while holding shift+ctrl+opt+cmd does not bring up 'purge pref" option. I get the welcome window you get when Illustrator is new.
this is really slowing down productivity.
ANSWER: Hi Powell,
Your preferences are reset if it came up with the welcome screen.
I think I know your issue since you just mentioned copying from older docs to new CS3 documents.
If these were created in older versions (CS or older) then there is not much you can do, they may be corrupted due to the changes in the color engines since CS2. After you copy the items over, I would just "select all unused" and purge the extra colors.
Thanks

QUESTION: The docs are all CS3.
It's just almost every time I paste something I get the 1,000 swatch surprise. So if I clean out the color palette and an hour later have to paste something else I get the swatches again.
I've used CS3 since it came out. I just started here at this company. This is the only time I've encountered this.
Any other thoughts?
AnswerHi Powell,
It sounds like you have really old files that are corrupting when you convert them to CS3. It has nothing to do with what you are doing, but I did encounter something like this when I copied an Illustrator 8 file into CS3. The only work around I can offer is to clean out the palette as you go along, or convert and resave the documents in CS3 before you copy and paste.
Thanks
Kevin
