Adobe Illustrator/editing text in a layered file

Question
QUESTION: I've unlocked all the layers, but can't edit text in a file created by someone else.
what am I missing?

ANSWER: Hi Kellie,

It could be that the text is outlined into shapes and not actually editable fonts. Otherwise, go to Object>Unlock All and see if the individual object is locked. More than likely it was outlined by the creator and cannot be edited.

Thanks

Kevin

QUESTION: How can it not be edited if these are the original files?  (Sorry, I'm an AI newbie)

Answer
Hi Kellie,

It all depends on how the person that created this file set it up. You can convert text into shapes in AI so that they cannot be edited and do not rely on fonts. It does not matter if this is the original file or not. My advice is to talk to the creator of the file to see how they set it up for you, if you can.

Sorry

Kevin
