Adobe Illustrator/text question

Question
Hi Kevin,

Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I'd like to ask why illustrator isn't creating a separate "sublayer" for each of the letters in my text block. For example, if i type the word "illustrator" i only get one layer for the word instead of 11 layers since they have 11 letters. I'll greatly appreciate your help. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Al,

Sublayers are always created for each text block, never for each letter. If you wish to have separate sublayers for each letter, you will need to create separate text boxes for each letter. If you see a document where it appears all letters are separated, it was either created outside of Illustrator (such as a Quark PDF) or the letters were converted to shapes using the Create Outlines command, then ungrouped.

Thanks

Kevin

Al,

Expanding the text will create shapes, which is the same as the Create Outlines command under Type. The results are the same, you will have objects and no longer have editable text.

Thanks

Kevin
