Question
QUESTION: I need some reminders about what some things are. Whats the difference
between an opacity mask/clipping mask and appearance?

ANSWER: Hi Emily,

In simple terms - an Opacity mask effects transparency of an object while a Clipping Mask uses one shape to crop out another. Appearance refers to the properties of an object, such as its fill, stroke, effects, etc.

QUESTION: ok, what tool can people use to make something 3D?

ANSWER: Hi Emily,

None of those will make something 3D. You would use the Effects>3D>Extrude and Bevel or Revolve command to create a simple 3D object.

QUESTION: My blending isn't working. I have 2 squares, well 1 rectangle and a square on it,
with half of the rectangle showing, i go to object, blend options, then blend
make and it looks really weird.

Answer
Hi Emily,

"Looks really weird" does not explain enough. Check your blend options first and adjust them to see if it looks better. In the future, please ask new subjects as new questions as you are only allow so many follow ups before the site cuts you off. It also allows you to rate questions separately.
