Adobe Illustrator/Adobe 10- filling open shapes

Question
Hi,
I am using AI 10 and having problems with the fill option. I have my drawings scanned first, imported, and then I used the pen option to draw over them. So I have these shapes with open ends
( example: a dog). Now when I try to fill the shape, it only paints in segments ,meaning picks first and last points of each segments and only fills that part so I end up with unfilled sections within the drawing. I have tried grouping, merging, adding the segments but its not working. Please help!"

Answer
Hi Gilda,

That is how an open shape works, it will fill from start to end point and depending on how the object is drawn, the rest of the object is left open. Try drawing with closed shapes. Merging, adding segments, etc. will still leave you with open paths. If you are trying to create an open stroke look to the drawing, try drawing the open-pathed outline first, then a separate fill with no stroke sent behind that line drawing that can be a closed path.

Thanks
