Adobe Illustrator/File, Open vs. File, Place

Question
When importing an image into Illustrator, what is the difference between bringing it in via File, Open vs. a File, Place?  I always thought it was better to do a File, Place, but a co-worker said she has never had trouble just doing a File, Open.  Just wondering what the actual advantages/disadvantages are to each operation.

Answer
Hi Amy,

Using file>place maintains your documents settings and panels, such as swatches, etc. Opening a non-illustrator file removes all swatches, settings, etc. There is nothing wrong about opening vs. place, only if you don't mind losing information on doing so.

Thanks
