Question
Hello, I'm going to be designing signage for print on a Roland digital printer, and they require and .eps printing file, can I do layout in Indesign and still maintain text editing if file later opened in Illustrator CS4. There is no eps format in Indesign.
I have saved file as pdf in Indesign, then reopened in Acrobat and resaved as .eps, opens in Illustrator but text has created outlines.
Thanks for you help.

Answer
Hi Christine.

I have run into this "Illustrator has created outlines to preserve etc, etc," issue a few times and I think it is the occurrence of glyphs. Ligature glyphs can be inserted automatically for character pairs in your text, like fl or fi (f's are the usual suspects), InDesign actually uses Discretionary ligatures as well (more ligatures than other apps).

Turn off the ligatures and try to make the PDF again.
  1. Select text.
  2. Deselect Ligatures from the Character panel menu or the Control panel menu.

If this doesn't work... is the file huge? Can I take a look at it?

I have CS3, so you would have to save as follows:
Use File > Export, then choose InDesign Interchange (INX) from the Format pop-up menu. The resulting INX file can be opened in CS3.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
