Adobe Illustrator/printing with black cartridge

Question
hi! i've created a document in illustratorCS. it is entirely black and white, no color. my printer (HPphotosmart C3140) has both a blue/red/yellow cartridge and a black ink cartridge. i did convert my document to grayscale, but when i print nothing is coming out on the page - its as if it wont use the solid black ink.
when i try saving as a pdf it isnt showing up in adobereadercs.
i'm not that computer savvy - but if you have any ideas why this is happening i'd appreciate it!

Answer
Hi Heather,

Make sure your document is set to CMYK instead of RGB. (File>Document Color Setting). Then in your print window, go to your printer specific items and see if it has a one color print option. Not being familiar with your printer, Im not sure what options you have with it, but most do have that.

Thanks
