Adobe Illustrator/Text Effect

Question
Hi,
Could you please tell me how to get the effect where the text over a shape
changes colour? For example, both text and shape are the same colour, and
the text is half on/half off the shape, but where the text is on the shape, the
colour is white or the colour of the background.

Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks : )

Answer
Hi Danielle,

You will have to turn your text into shapes to achieve this. First start by selecting your text with the selection tool (NOT the text tool), and going to Type>Create Outlines. This will convert it to shapes.

You can now use your color/swatches on these items just like any other shape.

If you are overlapping across a letter, you will need to use Live Paint, or an easier way is to use the Pathfinder- Ungroup your letters, then select the shape and the letter that is overlapping. Then go to your Pathfinder (window>pathfinder) and select Divide. It will split it into individual pieces.

Thanks
