Adobe Illustrator/Merging glyph to text
Expert: Kevin Stohlmeyer - 9/4/2010
QuestionQUESTION: Hi, I have AI CS3. I am having difficulty merging my font with a glyph that I have overlapped onto the font. All of the text has merged, but this one glyph image is still not merged. What am I doing wrong? I use this application for cutting vinyl, so it is important that it actually merges. I typically use CorelDraw, but CD does not accept glyphs. So, I am trying to learn this program. I have googled and cannot figure it out. Thank you so much!
ANSWER: Hi TOnya,
Before you merge, select the glyph with the selection (black arrow) tool and go to text>create outlines. This will convert it to paths which will allow you to merge it with the fonts. You should do this technique will all text before merging.
Thanks

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply, Kevin. For some reason, the glyph is still not merging with the text. I've tried multiple times, even undoing everything I had done and starting over with it all. Still, no success. I am using Origins font with one of the decorative additions added to the last word. Thank you again for your time.

AnswerHi Tonya,
When you select your text/ glyph and use Type>Create Outlines does it show up as paths? If it does, you should then select both parts with the selection tool (black arrow) and go to your Pathfinder. Click the "Add" Button (first button top row) and then click the "Expand" button. This will merge them into one complete shape.
Thanks
