Question

Image piece
Hi,

I am new to illustrator, and have been working with photoshop for the most part, so the change is throwing me off a little. I am needing to create a circle that is shaded on the middle-top left and top right parts of the circle. I don't need to create a sphere, but I need to only shade those 2 spots. I have attached part of the image i am needing to recreate. I have no problem remaking with photoshop using the burn and dodge tool. But alas, no burn or dodge in illustrator, and no way to just convert. So, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Hi Justin

What would be easiest is to create two shapes for the darker portions of the sphere and then change the blending mode and opacity. You can use multiply at a lesser opacity to blend it in. Then go to Effects>Stylize>Feather and run a feather effect to give it the softer edges.

The only other option that can create this kind of look in Illustrator would be to use the Gradient Mesh, which is quite complex and advanced.

Thanks

Kevin
