Adobe Illustrator/changing the AI swatch

Question
Hi, I got an AI file as a free download. When I open it, it appears in the swatch panel - it's basically a design with thin winding grey lines in the foreground and some monochrome background. Can I separate the lines from the background somehow? And colour them black? I realize this is a very basic question, so only a few hints in the right direction would help. Thank you very much, Ana

Answer
Hi Ana,

It sounds like the lines are already separate pieces to the background. If you cannot select the lines already with the selection tool, check to see if they are locked using the Layers panel. Just click the lock icon where you see it (if it is there), then you should be able to select them and change the color using the swatches panel.

Thanks

Kevin
