Adobe Illustrator/illustrator wont apply feather

Question
I'm trying to apply a 3.47 feather to an image and each time I do, an error message comes up saying 'The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. [-148]'. After I try using feather, it starts saying the same message if I try to scale the image at all. I'm using CS5, and haven't been able to find any up to date information on how to fix it.
Hi Jessie,
First, how complex is the image you are applying the feather to? Is it a vector image or is it placed raster art?
Normally this error indicates that you have run out of available RAM to run this process.
What kind of computer are you running, what OS and how much RAM is installed and available?
