Adobe Illustrator/fonts not turning off

Question
Hi Kevin-
I am working in OS X 10.5.8 with CS4 and have a font issue.
When using illustrator all 980 of the fonts that are on my computer are on and active.  Trust me when I say that I have turned them off in Font Book (several times), yet they are still open when I go back into illustrator.  It takes forever scrolling through that long list trying to get to the 1 I actually want to use.
Please help!!!

Hi Kristen,

Easy answer - Font Book sucks. You will need to remove all but the core system fonts and then use a font management software such as Extensis Suitcase or Font Explorer Pro.

They will allow you to auto-enable or manually turn fonts on or off.
