Adobe Illustrator/use type tool inside shape

Question
I want to type inside a crescent shape that I created using the circle tool and the "subtract" pathfinder action, and i get a message saying "you must click on a non-compound, non masking path to create text inside a path. Help!

Answer
Hi Margaret,

You will need to expand the shape. I'm assuming you are using an older version of Illustrator, in which the pathfinder actions leave you with a compound shape, not an expanded one. Go to the Pathfinder panel and click Expand to create your final shape. You can then use the type tool inside.

Thanks
