Adobe Illustrator/Problems with printing .PNG files

Question
QUESTION: I have made a multi page brochure in InDesign. I have several placed .PNG files with transparent backgrounds. I create a PDF file from the InDesign file. Everything looks great onscreen. Then, we print it of our office Ricoh printer and large gray boxes print behind each of the .PNG files. This also is happening when we try and print it off our large format Roland printer. Off my own home printer - Epson Workforce 845--it prints GREAT!

We have even tried to resave all the .PNG files as .PSD files with transparent backgrounds, the same thing happens.

What is going on?

ANSWER: Hi Wendy,

How old are your printers at the office? It could be a Postscript error on their part.

I need to know some specific tech information to accurately diagnose the issue. What version of InDesign, Acrobat, Operating System and specifically what printer models you are using and also if you are printing through a RIP computer or directly from a desktop.

Thanks

Kevin

QUESTION: Ricoh printer might be a few years old, will have to ask make and model (I am a remote employee so build all the files but am not printing them). Roland large format printer...brand new, latest model: LEJ-640, literally was released a few months ago. NOT printing through a RIP computer, doing it directly in both cases from desktop. InDesign CS5.5. Acrobat 9. OS: Windows 7.

Answer
Hi Wendy,

Unfortunately, without knowing exactly what they are doing at the office this is hard to pin down. My first reaction is either they are not using Acrobat to print your PDFs or they have some setting that is not honoring transparency postscript in the PDF. Either way, this really isn't anything wrong with your files or what you are doing.

Have they offered any explanation as to why this is happening?

Kevin
