Question
High Amy,

I am trying to figure out how to make a ribbon (basicaly a banner shape) blowing in the wind look 3-D with light highlights and shadows.  I suspect this can be done with the web tool, but I can't figure out how to do it. I also tried using the gradient tool.  This blue ribbon will have yellow writing in the center of it "your number 1".  Anyhow, if you could give me some instruction on how to get this effect I would be very thankful!

Best regards,

Mark Ahmed

Answer
Hi again, Mark,

After pointing you to that tutorial with the pink curtains, I did it.  And then I got hooked doing it.  So I wasted a few hours drawing rendered ribbons, circles, hearts, all that stuff. I'm not so good at it.  It does take patience. ANYWAY. I found this cool tutorial on how to make a realistic pearl that I thought you might like.

I had given you the fast answer to your question about changing the light direction for a gradient applied to a circle.  When you have a little time, check this one out.  It's a very nice technique.

Have a good weekend,
Amy

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
