Question
Hi Amy,
When I open a PSD file in Illustrator 10 (mac), the object gets brought in but
it's blank?  Basically, I just want to edit some text overlayed in the PSD.  THis
is what I'm doing:

File - Open - filename
select "Convert Photoshop Layers to Objects"

Alternately, I can select "Flatten Photoshop layers to a single object" , which
seems to import the image correctly, but it is uneditable.

Please advise on how to edit a PSD in Illustrator.  Thanks in Advance!
Gary

Answer
Hi Gary,

I did some playing around with this. You're doing everything right.

I wonder if it's a similar problem to the one I experienced for the first time today. I had some layers of an imported PSD document not appear when I imported it. What fixed it was importing it into an RGB document instead of CMYK. I found the fix accidentally and don't know if that would work for you.

Does this happen with all fonts? Can you make a dummy document and see if it's a global problem or specific to that document? Can you try changing the font? I can see where that might cause this problem.

Speaking of that, maybe you simply need to let AI rebuild the font cache. You do this by quitting all Adobe apps and searching for all files with the naming pattern of adobefnt*.lst where * is a number. Delete them. They will be rebuilt.

What else? Does the font happen to be white? Try assigning it a color and see if that does anything.

I can't think of anything else offhand but let me know what happens because I'm curious!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
