Adobe Illustrator/File Size

Question
I am using illustrator 10. I made a simple poster with letter head and only 1 pic. The pic is only 1.2 MB. For some strange reason my file size is 13.6 MB and when I pdf it, it is still like 10 MB! What the heck is going on?! I would like to e-mail it and it will be going to print. What can I do to seriously reduce this file size?

Hey there Lee,

Could you send me the ILLUSTRATOR file?

AmyLynPace @ yahoo.com is my address. Remove the spaces.

You'll need to save down to Version 9 for me please, and embed the fonts.

Also, let me know if you are SAVING as a PDF or if you have Adobe Acrobat w/Distiller.
