Illustrator CS
Computer:  PC

In the past couple of days when I save an Illustrator file as an AI an error box appears:
An unknown error has occurred.

I can save Illustrator files as eps, pdf etc. but NOT as an AI.  Any suggestions?  We've already called tech support and they basically said to reload everything onto my computer.  But won't that wipe all of my files?  Please help.  Thanks.

Here's the simple answer. Save as eps!  I know, you knew that already.  In situations like the answer tech support gave is the best solution.  Somewhere along the line something got corrupted.  If you just re-install the Illustrator program that will not harm any other files.  I do recommend backing everything up if you haven't already.  
I would try reinstalling Illustrator first.  If that doesn't clear it up then unfortunatelty a clean install is the next step.  Make sure you're backed up!
