Adobe Illustrator/Illustrator Shut Down after Opening

Question
Illustrator has begun shutting itself down following opening.  When I tried to remove to re-install it, the InstallShield Wizard said that the wizard was interrupted before Adobe Illustrator CS2could be completely installed.  What can I do to fix this?

Answer
Hi Lindsay,

I'm guessing you're on a PC from your mention of "the wizard."

What you could try first is going to the Control Panels > Add or Remove Programs and see if you can remove it. If you've never done this, you simply wait for the list of all your programs to load, choose Illustrator CS2 and click Change/Remove. It's pretty self-explanatory from there.

If you run into any messages stating that shared files are being removed, you can choose not to delete them.

Hopefully, after a restart, your install will work.

If you still can't get the install to work, there is a utility out there called Windows Install Cleanup Utility. It's available at Microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
Running this should clean up the 'incomplete install' artifacts on your machine.

About your next install attempt: It's a good idea to read the installation articles in the Knowledgebase at Adobe.com. My immediate thoughts include turning off as much anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall software before installing as you can or disconnecting from the internet altogether and install in safe mode. Here's a tech doc that explains how: http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/325672.html

I hope this helps you!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
