Question
Hello Amy,
i was just reading your replies to file managing when working on illustrator,
do you have any idea why sometimes it doesn't save the changes and you have to save on a separate folder to be safe, also it is annoying that you can't trash the files you opened before even if you quit illustrator
(?)
any suggestions
Thanks,

Answer
Hi Rafael,

This is a problem that happens to some Windows users.  Apparently there is a problem with Windows and how it uses Illustrator icons during a Save.

Adobe has not yet fixed this.

There is a weird little workaround but you might find it too annoying. If you don't use icon views much in your day to day work, you can find a file named aiicon.dll and change it to aiicon.old.  This actually turns off the icons for AI documents but apparently solves the Save error for SOME people.  Warning, some people find it has NO effect. You can change the file back to aiicon.dll if you find it has no effect or isn't worth it to you.

Do this when Illustrator is not running... and I believe it will only work on a "fresh" document. I guess that means one that's just been Saved As...

On the outside chance that you are saving to a Network, try saving the file to your local hard drive.  Sometimes there are errors when saving over remote files that you cannot fix - it's a network issue.

Those are two things I can think of off the bat.  Let me know!

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
