Adobe Illustrator/Illustrator print problem

Question
QUESTION: I have illustrator cs2 on my new imac - i have an hp 6980 printer too. when i
send any illustrator file to print, it will only print half the page then stops
printing like its finished. I can open the files in photoshop and they print just
fine. have you had this happen before??

ANSWER: Hi DeAna.

Assuming the artboard is letter size/portrait orientation, make sure the Print Setup defines a LETTER page size and use View > Page Tiling to make sure the whole print area is within that letter size. If the dotted gray line appears somewhere off the edge of the paper, double click on the PAGE TOOL in the tool palette and the page tiling should re-orient/center itself. The page tool may be hiding under the hand tool.

Make sure everything, including the HP driver settings, are set to letter size paper and portrait orientation, not landscape. There are at least two places you have to check that - in Illustrator and in the HP settings.

Let me know if this solves it!

Answer
Hi DeAna,
Sorry my guesses didn't hit the mark.

I looked up your issue on Adobe.com user forums. It is a real and known bug and has no fix at this time.

Adobe suggests it is an HP driver issue, HP has told people (hearsay) that it is an Illustrator issue.

Workarounds include printing to a PDF and printing that on the HP or printing from PhotoShop.

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you. I have an HP Deskjet, too. Illustrator just isn't meant to print to non-PS printers, I guess.

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.
