Adobe Illustrator/Joining Text to Art

Question
I have a PC and Adobe Illustrator 11.1.  I have an art graphic of the usa Flag and I have some Text on top of this in the stripes area (red & white). What I want to do is in Freehand on the Mac we call it joining so the text becomes striped red & white as well,  I don't know what it is in Illustrator.  Is there a way to do this in Illustrator, couldn't find anything in the manual, if you have a page number maybe I can figure it out.  Thanks  Karen

Answer
Hi Karen,

What you want is to make a clipping mask with that text.

Please make sure the text is text (not outlines), bring the text to "in front" of the image, make sure neither are part of other groups.

Select both things and hit Ctrl + 7 or Object>Clipping Mask>Make

Let me know if that works!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

Experience

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
