Question
I'm trying to create a SuperMan logo in Illustrator.  where do I start?  Should I try to trace one or import a copy from Photoshop>

Answer
hi Walter,

I assume you want the new logo to be vector graphics or you wouldn't be using Illustrator and trying to re-create a logo you already have in PhotoShop, right?

Well, you didn't mention which version of Illustrator you are using but if you are using CS2, you should place a PhotoShop file of the S logo and use Illustrator's "Live Trace" feature. See your help file for info on how to use that but it's quite simple. You basically select what you want to trace and click "Live Trace." You'll likely have to clean it up after that and then get rid of the placed PhotoShop image.

That will get you where you want to go pretty quickly.

If you are using an older version of Illustrator without live trace, you'll have to manually trace the placed image using the pen tool.  That can be quite time-consuming!

Hope this helped!

Expertise

I can help troubleshoot your Illustrator 9 through CS3 (and most CS4) problems and suggest the best way to get the results you need. Although I can help with some installation issues, my forte is prepress and how to use the tools and functions in the application itself.

I've been a graphic artist for over 20 years. Oh my God, 20 years.
